Feedback comments to final year project students

Academic year 2011/12

Students have journal ans photo galleries in which they may write notes as they work on their final year individual projects. They are encouraged to use the commenting feature to write questions as they work. The project supervisor can post feedback using the same commenting feature. Comments written by each student is private.

The list below contains feedback comments written by the project supervisor, but, without any student information. It is provided in case other students have similar questions.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The report was slightly too short and the formatting suggested that the work was done in haste or at the last minute. The design requirements in the objectives were on the right track, but, needs to be more specific and changed to quantitative requirements. The background research needs some more detailed information and the citations have to change to the correct Harvard APA format. The initial design is incomplete and a lot of notes should be added during the project in order to make sure that the design is properly documented in the final report. The project schedule is too generic and the plan needs to be reviewed at a more detailed level to anticipate possible risks and contingencies towards the end of the project. The format of the references list is incorrect and needs to change to the correct Harvard APA format before submitting the final report.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The report has a good format and organisation. The objectives and background research were clear and easy to read with the examples. However, supporting citations from external reference sources are needed, especially a reference to the people who initially developed the first CAPTCHA.

The initial design and work plan indicated that the project was making rapid progress. The references list was correctly formatted.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The project objectives were clear and there was a sufficient amount of background research information. The project schedule contained relevant stages of planned work.

As the design of the project has been evolving since the preliminary report, please remember to write good notes about the new design so that it is ready to include in the final report. The report needs to use more citations of external references, especially to support the background research information. The references list format is mostly correct, but, has some errors which needs to be fixed before the final report submission.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The report was well organised and the formatting was pleasant. The objectives and design requirements were clear and concise. The initial design and project plan were consistent with the current progress of the project.

The background research could be extended to better provide a bit more information about the use of RFID with the Arduino platform. Citations were included, but, they need to be changed to use the correct Harvard APA format. The references were correctly formatted, but, the reference list should be ordered alphabetically rather than using a numbered list.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The report has a good format and organisation. The background research (exposition) was sufficient, but, needs citations from external reference sources. The initial design (preliminary ideas) was a good initial attempt to define the scope of the new authentication method. The work schedule was sufficient. The references list was correctly formatted, but, needs more external references. Perhaps increasing from 3 sources to 5 or 6 would be a good target.

Feedback on preliminary report:

The project objectives and background research contained sufficient information. But, the report has minimal information about the initial design and project plan. Citations from external sources are needed to support the report. The references list is short and the format is incorrect. I'm aware that the project design has changed significantly since the preliminary report submission and the new design should be documented in the project journal to make it easier to prepare for the final report.

Feedback on preliminary report:

Use of headings would help identify important topics within each major section. For example, the Background Research section would benefit from headings such as Arduino History, Alternative Products, Arduino Libraries, etc.

The initial design requirements are described reasonably well. They should be improved with more precision as the project progresses and more prototyping is done. The current requirements list is a bullet list, which is incorrect. The list must be an ordered and numbered list for the final report, in which the highest priority requirement is first. The second list of "ideal requirements" should be removed because it is not part of the project. It is possible that you may want to use some of the ideas from that list in the Further Work section of the final report.

The project plan is good and you should maintain an updated plan on your project journal page.

The appendices provide very good illustrations of research and prototyping activities that you've done.

The references list is rather short and you should aim to add 2 to 3 more resources before submitting the final report. The format of the references are incorrect and you should fix that before the final report is done so that it uses the correct Harvard APA referencing format.

Overall, the report conveys a solid impression that the project is under control and you are making good progress towards the plan.

Use this format instead:

If your photo name was example.jpg then put this command into your journal page to display a photo in your gallery:
{{image src="StudentProjectCN2012Gallery01/example.jpg"}}
Note that the names are case sensitive and avoid using names with spaces. Try using all lowercase for photo names.

The journal looks good. Do not use photobucket to store your photos. Upload them to your photo gallery.
