Response to case study scenario 1

As a responsible junior engineer working in the safety testing group of the company that manufactures USB flash memory drives I am not going to ignore the problem. My morals professional ethics and values force me to respond in such a situation instead of keeping quiet.

Why I am not ignoring the problem because I know that if I ignore the problem it causes various issues including financial and legal problems and it will damage our brand image in the eyes of our valued customer. It also creates bad publicity for our business and it damages the company’s goodwill.

I am really upset about my manager’s decision and his commands that to ignore the problem. I believe in Zero defects of our flash memory drives after the final test. With so many electrical product safety testing standards currently in use and many civil and legal actions pending in various courts around the world, electrical product safety testing is more critical than ever to ensure that all products are safe before they reach the end-user.

The majority of manufacturers are fully aware of the hazards associated with electrical equipment and the ramifications of noncompliance with relevant safety standards or test house agreements. Our supervisor needs to know and understand the product safety testing standards that apply to USB flash memory drives before he delivers the faulty products to our customers.

The product safety testing standards of UK for information technology products also applicable USB flash memory drives too. I want to make clear my supervisor and owner that these product safety-testing standards specifically address the safety testing for all production and design stage of USB as well as its production line testing. It is important to identify and understand the applicable product safety testing standards before we deliver the products to our valued customers.

UK Product safety testing standards offer not only guidance regarding the design and construction of specific types of products, but also advises about the other important safety tests to be performed, as well as other tests such as those for temperature rise an short circuit and overload.

From the beginning the design process for USB flash memory drives, the objective of our designer and engineers must be to ensure that the correct level of protection against electric shock and fire hazards are incorporated into the design of flash drives. This involves considering protection for both the person who has to build the product and the eventual end-user.

So, because of delivering a large order to our important client they will face a potential fire hazard by using our product and once they start using it they feel they are cheated. So, I will advice my supervisor to recall the damage product as soon as possible to avoid legal actions from our client and replace them with USB flash memory drives with best quality and standards with zero defects.
