How will the Lolpad work?

The lolpad will work very much like a conventional keyboard. Inside a conventional keyboard there are two layers,
we will call these layer A and layer B, These different layers have pins, When two pins are joined together (via a button key) it produces a symbol.
In a standard keyboard there are 10 connectors on each layer (10*10 produces 100 possible outcomes).
When two connectors are joined together it produces a symbol.
An example of this can be seen here:
Symbols

If pin 06 on layer A and pin 08 on layer B were connected, the letter " L " would be send through the USB port.

How will we send multiple letters?

This is where the micro processor comes in. The LolPad is different to a normal keyboard as it will need to send multiple
letters. For example sending "LOL". The micro processor in the product will have a program which will respond with a set of letters
corresponding when a certain pin combination is pressed.
An example of this can be seen here:
lol

If pin 02 on layer A and pin 03 on layer B are connected (via a key on the pad marked "LOL"), then the microprocessor would notice the combination
and output the letters "LOL" individual through the USB port.

How is it connected to the PC?

The LolPad will be connected to the users computer via a USB cable, that will be plugged into a USB port. When the LolPad is connected,
drivers will be automatically installed by windows (standard plug and play) .
These drivers will be of type "HID (Human Interface Device)03h" which are standard keyboard drivers.

What software will it be compatible with?

Because the LolPad is installed as a standard keyboard device, it means that all programs that use a keyboard will be
compatible with the LolPad. This means no extra 3rd party software has to be included.

What buttons will be available?

The LolPad will be devised of 13 buttons in total (one being the enter).

LOL! Laugh Out Loud
LMAO! - Laugh My A*s Off
ROFL! - Role On The Floor Laughing
STFU - Shut The F*ck Up
MEGA - This button puts "MEGA" in front of everything
BRB - Be Right Back
WTF - What The F*ck
BRT - Be Right There
BTW - By The Way
WB - Welcome Back
OMG - Oh My God!
AFK - away from keyboard
ENT - Enter (this is a function button, that will return the words)

Business Opportunity Analysis

Matt I, Matt W, James, Pat, Adam

Business Opportunities

  1. Sponsorship - MSN sponsor logitec webcams, possibilty of link buttons such as a button you press links you straight to facebook
  2. Outlets - general shops such as Tesco also speciallist shops such as Gadget shop and Hawkins Bazar online such as play.com and amazon.com

HOW ABOUT DOING THIS IN THE STYLE OF THE APPRENTICE!?
one dress up as sir Alan asking "So.. How are you going to sell this...? [pointing a figure] "
then we cut into a clip on the presentation about business opportunity analysis
or we say some of the specification then a clip of Sir Alan cuts in saying
"Stop it with all this techno mumbo jumbo... How am i going to sell'it!! [pointing a figure]"
then we cut into business opportunity analysis.
Or
"Stop it with all this techno mumbo jumbo... how am i going to use it!! [again pointing figure]"
Then cut into a bit of design requirements talking about how many keys e.c.t

- Please can we do this!
-Scott + Alex

This is an excellent idea, very original way of putting the information across!!
Now weve just got to complete the information that were going to be conveying in the presentation. Get cracking boys!
- That comment deserved a LOL right there ;)

Side note : What does quality mean to your product?

Video format:
- 15-20 mins in duration.
- Delivary mostly in person.
- Teams have a choice about the role of each student
- Greative use / inclusion of visual multimedia

The plan as discussed yesterday for the video:

Scenario: 1-2 minutes Chris, james, All
Introduction: 3 minutes All, Pat, Adam
Design requirements: 2 minutes All, scott, alex, james
Design specifications: 3 minutes All, scott, alex, pat
Business opportunity analysis: 3 minutes All Matt I, Matt W, James, Pat, Adam

this is the basic plan of action for fridays video session, if everybody can start working on there specific roles and the others.

Guys since I can only be in the recording for the first hour because of my lab. I'll help out with recording whatever gets sorted in the first hour.
-Phil

Talking points:
Start writing things that you think should be mentioned:

Business opportunities analysis:

Business opportunities analysis:

	- Start with how there is no other existing products similar to our design and the other products that exsist
-Only similar products, nothing to compete with! //(Yes. But WHY are there no similar products like this one for it to compete against. This goes back to is there an actual consumer base to reasonably market this product to.)//
		- Dicuss similar products briefly e.g 'in your pockets' and the number pads
	- there is a niche in the market as there is only similar products, nothing exactley the same as our design
		- Ideal time to target market as there is a gap the LOLpad! can fill.
		- Is cheap so would be ideal as a gift in the current economic climate //(A toblerone is cheaper. This is the sort of thing someone buys for their friend as a joke gift.)//
	- Very simple idea that wont be hard to implement on a wide scale
		- Profits, due to it bieng cheap produce, will be able to make money!
		- Dicuss costs, ie cost per unit, packaging. marketing,
		- Finish talking about the profit avaliable from this untapped part of the market (//Untapped part of the market yes. But flawed logic to assume that it **will** make money. Problem with an untapped market is that its been looked at and is either too risky or has very little area for profit.)//
	- Correct marketing will make the product successfull ie. teenagers!
	 	- Correct market penetration, marketing specifically at teenagers
	 	- Adverts on at the correct times, correct packaging to attract younger audiances, sold in shops frequented by youngsters
	- Developments for the future
		- new developments on the lolpad design for example wireless //(A bluetooth enabled lolpad. Please tell me your not serious.)//
		- Variations of the lolpad, new slang words
		- Regional lolpads, Cockney, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, American //(As a design idea it could work. But in reality such a variation of the product would be unprofitable and unmarketable.)//
		- Opportunities for constant growth //(The lolpad is a gimmick. For a gimmick to have growth opportunity it needs to have some ability to expand. I can't see how this gimmick could grow to further opportunities.)//

Somehow i've managed to channel Sir Alan.

-Phil

Good Comments there phil, have you looked into how much the packaging should be e.c.t?
- Scott

age range will need to be taken account of because that will have many knock on effects. For example, if the age range we're targeting is someone in their teens till mid twenties then we need to think about where they shop. so i think we would need to push our products into shopping malls and target gadget shops, and larger stores like debenhams and john lewis because this is where the product is more likely to be encountered by our target consumers.
-jeddolls

Agreed! Somewhere like PC world, although they sell similar products, is less visited by our target customer due to their location. Mostly in retail parks just outside towns.
-Adam

Script for Video Presentation Introduction

Our design is called the LOLpad.
So what exactly is a LOLpad?
The LOLpad is effectivly a novelty keyboard. In today's fast paced, digital media world, words and phrases have become abbreviated, often beyond comprehension.
Have you ever recieved a message you didn't understand?

'Place a sheet in front of sir alan with a confusing set of abbreviations written on it. e.g. GR8 1 M8. CYA L8R. GTG. LOL.'

Believe it or not, this reads, great one mate. see you later. got to go.
This text slang has almost become a second language with todays generation.

The function of the LOLpad is to provide a keyboard. that instead of letters, has these modern abbreviations.
For example, there would be a LOL button, that would print the letters 'L', 'O', 'L' on the screen.
This, although a novelty item, will speed up the typing process and help make digital messagin even faster.
To begin with, the LOLpad will be designed for use with PC's, mainly with instant messaging software such as Windows MSN messenger and Facebook Chat.
If successful, a smaller, more compact version could be made for use with mobile phones. This is currently not feasible due to the wide range of connection types used by the varying phone manufacturers.
The aim of the following presentaion is to show you the potential of the LOLpad as a novelty product and prove that it can compete in today's market.
-Adam
