Summary of coursework 2

Academic year 2008/9

There were 117 submissions and 12 non-submissions.

A number of coursework articles did NOT use a book as a research source. For many articles, research consisted of just a list of websites and there were no explanation for why the sources were selected other than random search results. Although the research requirement was repeated many times in class and online, it was obviously ignored by many students.

Many articles had no regard for basic writing requirements. There were articles that did NOT have a title. Many articles did NOT use basic forms of organization such as paragraphs, headers, whitespaces and conclusions. Additionally, a noticeable amount of spelling errors further hinted at a lack of care about the coursework.

Numerous articles did NOT use citations or had incorrectly formatted references, which indicate very little respect for the value of written works and the efforts of authors.

The amount of effort indicated by the submitted articles is disappointingly lacking considering that this coursework is 60% of the unit mark.

The impression is that students do NOT value writing as a skill for communication and reading as a skill for learning. Both of these skills are important in a competitive economy which requires each person to continuously learn new skills.

There were a few students who did invest time and effort to research their topics and write articles that explained the role of computers in reducing environmental damage caused by transportation networks. Those articles have been highlighted in yellow on the coursework page.
