The Technology Context – B101
SOLAR CELLS PERL CELLS
Repot: How Solar Cells will affect the issue of sustainable technology and if the Cells can be used on a larger scale
Introduction:
This report is based on a project of my choice, which is already being developed – solar cell. This is the perfect example that shows how much people can achieve without using up limited resources and that sustainable technology could give us better lives. The main objective of this report is to describe the project background and objectives, issues that arise from financial perspective and concentrate a bit more on sustainable technologies in general.
What I hope to achieve in this project:
This project is about the issue of Sustainable Technology and how it can be used as alternatives to current ways of generating and saving energy. The issue of sustainable technology is finding ways of generating energy using renewable sources. In previous sections of this project I wrote about the feasibility of generating and saving enough energy from the Solar cells, and I also stated the issue of generating energy from the sun on a large scale in a presentation. This report is about how solar cells will affect the issue of sustainable technology and whether or not solar cells can be used on a larger scale. The cells that I will talk about are some of the largest and most efficient in the world. The PERL cells. The minority carrier lifetime and the diffusion length depend strongly on the type and magnitude of recombination processes in the semiconductor. For many types of silicon solar cell, SRH recombination is the dominant recombination mechanism. This is necessary because of the decrease of available fuels and gas that are used for generating power. The burning of the fuels and gas are also having a negative effect on the environment. In order to help improve the conditions of the environment, use of these sources of energy will have to be decreased, better still, or not used at all.
Research Question
What happens at the moment?
Homeowners who want to install these types of technologies have to get planning approval, which involves applying to the local council. The process, which is the same as applying to do an extension or make structural changes to a property, can take months and cost hundreds of pounds
Will I need planning permission now?
You certainly will until the new rules have been consulted on and put into law, which the government hopes will be done by October.
OBJECTIVES & ACHIEVEMENTS
OBJECTIVES:
Global warming is a big issue that has to be tackled for example with the PERL Cells, do research for a new ways to improve helping the environment for our future generations so they wont have to fix the problems that we made. Our planet fuels are in limited supply and wont last forever therefore we have to look for other sustainable resources such as solar power, wind turbines, and many more. We can change all of this by putting new plans and researching for new power sources that won’t effect the environment.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
With solar energy usage on the increase globally, it's predicted a third of all new electricity production installed each year will be PV by 2015
Solar energy has cemented its place as the world’s fastest-growing energy source with global production of photovoltaic cells (PV) standing at 3,800 megawatts last year. Manufacture was up 50% over 2006.
“The exponential growth in PV production is a result of PV becoming cost effective as a distributed electricity generation option,” said Travis Bradford, of US-based non-profit, the Prometheus Institute for Sustainable Development, which originated the figures.
POLITICAL AND FINANCIAL EFFECTS
The political effects of finally finding a renewable energy source that would be massive. This planet would have a new lease of life and for the future generations there would not have the fear of how much the people their own planet. It would mean that fuel and gas companies that generate energy using fossil fuels and gas would have to change their business plan or go out of business but it would mean more opportunities for new companies to build and maintain Solar Cells that generate the most energy possible from the sun.
Leading the way:
The US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has part-funded the development of a Very High Efficiency Solar Cell (VHESC) with the eventual goal of producing affordable solar battery chargers to fit out troops.
At the moment, 20% of the weight of a soldier’s pack is made up of batteries which can power their equipment for three days. A reliable, efficient solar cell could significantly reduce that weight.
CONCLUSION
All development has to be based upon a sustainable resource. Consequences of this can be severe and at worst cost us our habitable environment and our atmosphere. This project doesn’t have any negative long-term effects. The solar cells energy itself is based upon the natural energy of the sun and the huge amount of energy that it provide. Overall energy within the Sun energy is never lost it’s always kept at the same level. When it gets to a point where too much energy is on one resource we have a major problem, but when it comes to the energy of the sun it is never a problem. Although I feel Solar cells energy cannot be the only source of renewable energy alone as we consume on average much more than it can provide at any one time. PERL Cells are a great sustainable technology and a developed technology; because it is a solution for our particular time. For Solar cells energy to become completely sustainable it needs to provide energy on a global scale although there are issues about having SOLAR Cells spread all over the world and worked with in most of the technologies that uses fuel for a source of energy but all of that can be suggested that we should use the most appropriate sustainable technology wherever possible. This is all personal relevant to both you and me as it’s our future generations that are going to take a great risk if we didn’t find a solution.
Graph and Pictures:
While expensive to fabricate, it is possible to produce cells with very high efficiencies. A cell for a solar car had the following characteristics:
Electron microscope image of the top surface of a PERL Cell showing a broken electroplated finger. The total finger width is less than 20mm and the contact width is 3mm
