The Technology Context – B101

Solar energy lights

The solar cycle was discovered by Samuel Heinrich Schwabe in 1843. After 17 years of careful observations of the sun, Samuel noticed a regular variation in the average number of sunspots seen from year to year on the solar disk.
The physical basis of the solar cycle was clarified in the early twentieth century by George Ellery Hale and collaborators, who in 1908 showed that sunspots were strongly magnetized (this was the first detection of magnetic fields outside the Earth), and in 1919 went on to show that the magnetic polarity of sunspot pairs:

1. Is always the same in a given solar hemisphere throughout a given sunspot cycle.
2. Is opposite across hemispheres throughout a cycle.

Hale's observations revealed that the solar cycle is a magnetic cycle with an average duration of 22 years. Half a century later, the father-and-son team of Harold Babcock and Horace Babcock showed that the solar surface is magnetized even outside of sunspots and that this weaker magnetic field is to first order a dipole and that this dipole also undergoes polarity reversals with the same period as the sunspot cycle. These various observations established that the solar cycle is a spatiotemporal magnetic process unfolding over the sun as a whole.
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cycle) Because of this one discovery we were able to use solar energy to heat water, charge batteries for different uses, store thermal energy, cooking and create solar powered satellites. Solar lights current status is very good and has shown that it is very useful for everyone in the world for example; currently it is helping millions of homes to keep light in their house, it is capable to going anywhere, meaning that owners will not have to worry about extra cables or wires to receive the position wanted. Solar lights also score high marks for their use of renewable energy and little or no emission of pollutants. Solar lights have a reputation for emitting a small amount of light for a short period of time.

Advanced LED has created a superb new range of solar street lights that are environmentally friendly, easy to install and offer tremendous light output. These lights are ideal for all sorts of uses and there modern design has found favour with everyone. Solar street lights can be easily installed and moved and deliver free, renewable energy which is stored in a battery ready to be used when darkness falls. This is the first step for the evolution of better solar energy lights.
In addition, solar garden lights have built-in photo sensors so they automatically turn off during the day and turn on at night. Best of all, light from solar garden lamps doesn't require the burning of fossil fuels and the generation of carbon dioxide (CO2) and pollutants associated with the generation of electricity by a utility. The purpose of this project is to expose how useful solar power lights can be to not just me as a student, but to everyone no matter what situation they are in.
Describe the primary sustainable technology objective or issue.
The purpose of solar energy lights is to provide light for a house, garden, high street and also most anywhere light is needed. It reduces electricity bills and it is definitely more environmentally friendly to everyone and it also saves energy that is stored from the sun’s solar power, this objective is very important to me as I am a student who cannot afford to waste money on electricity bills.
Technical Impact
The technical impact that solar energy has on our environment is excellent because it is capable of reducing the risk of electric shock; the reason for this is because there are no loose wires protruding from the solar energy light, therefore less of a safety hazard risk is imposed. This is especially advantageous for parents when young children are around.
Financial
When it comes to the financial side of solar energy lights, the benefits that you gain from solar energy lights seem almost too good to be true, for example, there are many people around the world that cannot afford to be keeping their garden bright with light. But with the unlimited resource of solar energy during the day, millions can save up to thousands of pounds.
To keep a garden full of light during the night will cost up to seventy pounds per week just to provide the power. It can also cost up to fifty pounds to buy a single electric garden light. (http://balaelectricals.co.uk/Products-Garden_Lights.html) So as a one off payment it would cost one hundred and twenty pounds plus seventy extra every week. However on average, solar energy lights cost up to fifty pounds and can last for several months. This means that a one off payment for a solar energy light will definitely be worth it. This will save you hundreds depending on the life of the solar energy light.

don.t know why image isn't showing, its my presentation bar chart

The bar chart here compares the proximity of the price of electric powered light for a week and the price of solar energy lights for a year.

Solar energy provides unlimited energy supply and is free to global or national people around the world, which makes solar energy lights a brilliant piece of technology. Also because solar energy is an efficient resource of energy, this allows sustainable development from a national and global perspective.
Even though solar energy lights have a reputation for not performing a better service then electric powered lights, which is definitely true because continuous powered is provided for electric powered light, but as for solar energy lights the batteries used are charged from the suns energy and then stored for the solar energy lights to then use, meaning that it can only use power that is stored. For this reason eventually the power will start to fade away. So it can be said that solar powered lights cannot perform better then electric powered light, but as shown above on the chart it is evident that it will cost a fortune to just maintain a good amount of light. Solar lights will always be better in my eyes because I am only a student that cannot afford to pay seventy pounds every week just on light.
My prediction is that solar powered lights will be more useful and efficient within the future. The reason being is we have grown from candles, gas burners, electrical lights, and solar energy lights to solar energy cars. Which leads to the final question, why would technology stop increasing now?
Discuss the potential political and financial effects of the project.
According to my research people believe that the government should be encouraging everyone to be using non-polluting products like solar energy cars because it will be much more environmentally friendly, but the only problem for this is that the first one off payment of solar energy cars are too expensive for an average person. For this reason homeowners believe that the government should pay up to fifty percent of non-polluted products. In addition, in Africa, 92% of people in the villages had no lights because of a big power cut that happened. If only the use of solar energy lights had been thought about by the government, then there will be no such thing as darkness for anyone in Africa.
As a whole, the government believe that giving money towards solar energy light has been a good investment for them because it has been proven that there has been a small drop in CO2 emissions. With this sort of result, no-one could be happier.
