Can wind power help towards reducing global warming?

Everyone worries about their carbon footprint, but what are they doing to reduce it? Just doing the little things can make a difference and can show people what they can do, for example if one person switches to good energy, which uses renewable energy sources, and they tell a friend, word soon spreads.
When I was little I used to drive through Cornwall and see the turbines, and I always wondered what they were for. So when I got older I found out, they were wind turbines used to generate power. Little things such as this has spread the word to me and my family.
In a little village called Delabole, 750 homes are with good energy, which uses the wind energy. This energy comes from the villages very own wind farm. All that is needed is ten turbines and all these people have power all year round.
Now if these people can do it, why cant other people follow? They can, that is why delabole wind farm is decommissioning its turbines and building new ones. The old turbines are being bought by another area which can build a wind farm. This means that another 750 homes can use wind power energy to power their homes. Then once established they can build better turbines.
If these turbines get moved somewhere else then people are going to hear about it and be able to look into using renewable energy in their homes.

The background.
Delabole wind farm is situated in Cornwall, and is planning to repower. The existing wind farm has ten turbines that run to power the village around it. This wind farm does what it can to keep the area green, therefore the wind farm is built to specific guild lines.
The farm is built on existing hedge lines so that the ground is not disturbed as much as digging up new lines to run the cables through. The cables are run underneath the ground so that the land can still be used for farming and wildlife can still use it.
Also the turbines are kept 1.6 km away from the village so that the noise pollution isn't a factor for them. This means that the village is getting the benefits from the turbines without the disadvantages.

The new plan.
The repower delabole is a new project which they have decided to build. So far planning permission has been granted and they are now working on the plans of how to build them without disrupting the surrounding area.
The new turbines are going to be placed where the existing turbines are so that the hedge lines are still used and the cables can run in the same places so that the wild life is not affected to much. The existing turbines will be decommissioned and moved to another area where they can be used so that they are not going to waste. This means a new wind farm can be made, therefore increasing the amount of wind farms in the country.
There are nine of the new turbines, which have a minimum life span of twenty years, meaning they will reduce the amount of CO2 by 1.3 million tonnes. These turbines also have larger rota diameters meaning they can harness a lot more wind energy because of the relationship between radius and area. Being taller these turbines can use the higher wind speeds at the higher altitudes therefore making more energy. Each turbines has a capacity of 850kW. Even though there will only be one less turbine ,when the speed of the wind increases two times the amount of energy produced increases eight times.
The construction of the new turbines will use as many local resources as they can to improve their trade.

The other plan.
They is also another plan, this involves having 6 turbines on the existing site, each with a capacity of 2.3MW. These aren't the largest turbines that are made however they are double the size of the existing turbines. Having these turbines will increase the output by over three times the current amount.

Disadvantages
There are a few disadvantages with wind power. They can get struck by lightning but most of them are made with resistant materials which stop the hit from affecting how they work and they don't cause any harm to the area around them, therefore people around don't get hurt.
Also turbines cannot work if the wind speed gets to high, therefore they shut down. Also if the wind speed is to low then they don't have enough wind power to make them work. Some of the time the turbines only work at 30% but this isn't all the time. Even with this factor the turbines power 750 homes for a year.

Sustainable Technology issue.
Having these new turbines will help towards the issue of global warming because using this process of producing energy is renewable, meaning it is always available. The energy produced by these nine turbines runs 750 homes.
The ten turbines which will be taken away will be placed in another area that can harness the wind power therefore power a lot more homes in other places. If this happens then people may realise that wind power can be used a lot more around the country and therefore they can help with cutting down global warming.
Other ways of harnessing energy without causing wasteful bi products are things like tidal power, solar power and on shore/off shore wind farms, most of these can be used all over the country and are renewable. This means that people all over the country can help with global warming.
Solar power is being used all over the country and the world. Solar power can be used to heat a homes water, all the house owner has to do is buy a solar power and have it put onto their house, the initial cost may seem high but over time the money is made back. Doing this also reduces the persons carbon footprint therefore helping with the global warming issue, which is what everyone is trying to do.
The amount of energy and money used to build the new wind farm will be paid back within the first six months of them running. This means that with a minimum life span of twenty years the amount of energy produced is very good.

The effects
Financially the wind turbines are very good. This site has its energy going to good energy which most of the village houses use. Using good energy causes and increase to the consumers by £7 a year, which is a small cost over the period of a year. Also the consumers are then reducing their carbon footprint which is much better all round.

Conclusion
Everybody wants to reduce their carbon footprint. Everyone knows about global warming and the effects its having on our environment. Everybody knows that there are ways we can stop this by using renewable sources. Villages like delabole are already using wind energy to its best, and now they are making it better. If wind farms were all around the country this would help a lot with reducing the countries carbon footprint.
There are some drawbacks to using wind power, for example they need maintaining a lot, and they can get struck by lightning, but these are only small factors, and can be improved with time.
Overall wind power is good start to try and reducing peoples carbon footprints and helping with global warming.
