The Technology Context – B101

Do we really need mobile phones with all the extra features?

Mobil phones have come a very long way from the beginning. The first mobile was the size of a car engine and did not have very good reception so it was no better then a house phone. After a few years there was a big improvement to mobile phones and they were actually small enough to carry out with you on the road but reception was still an issue. There was lots more technology and designing done to make mobile phones what there are today. You could now fit a mobile phone into the smallest pocket you have and even send an e-mail to someone you know on the other side of the world.
Is internet on your phone very necessary?
What is the point of spending a lot of money on a phone with the internet on it when you could get internet on your home computer for much cheaper. It can cost up to 30 pence a minute for the use of mobile internet browsing and more for actually downloading. The access to web pages and browsing is limited unlike the internet on a computer. Most of the new mobiles are now coming with built in Wi-Fi so they can easily connect to the net if there if a Wi-Fi point is near or a wireless modem.
Is a music player very necessary on a mobile?
It cost more when you want to buy a nice phone and it has a built in music player many people just want a nice phone and will never use the feature of the built in music player. If you already own an MP3 player there is know point to spend more money on a phone with a music player e.g. the iPod phone it costs $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB. I could go into a shop and buy a good mobile phone and a good iPod player for the same price as the 4GB iPhone.
Why don’t mobile phones usual last more then a year?
A mobile phone dose not usually last a year, the first thing to start acting up is the battery it won’t last as long as it did when the phone was first purchased. The reception is the next to go, it will stop working as strongly as it did in the beginning so its possible that you may miss calls or not even be able to make calls in certain places you could before. The last to go is the speakers sometimes you won’t be able to hare your phone ring loudly or you might not even be able to hare people talking clearly.

How will all mobile phone affect me as a student?
All these things affect me as a student because I don’t have a lot of money to live on and a mobile phone is very essential to my university life and my social life it is the only contact I have with my family and friends that don’t live close. If anything happens to my mobile then I will be forced to buy another and I don’t want to pay an extortionate amount of money for a phone I will only use for to make and resave calls. A lot of the extra features that are built into mobile phones are very unnecessary to me because I have internet in my house and I own an MP3 player. I think the mobile phone companies are making phones like this to over charge people and make more money for them selves I don’t have that type of money to be paying for phones with unnecessary features but if something happens to my current phone I will be left with no choice.
My Plan of enquiry
My primary message is do we need all the new features that come with a mobile phone.
I will continue to look into this matter but my views might change due to my money status and I might need a mobile phone for more then just calls one day.
