The Technology Context – B101
Hydroelectricity in Uganda
Uganda is a small country located in the eastern part of Africa. One of the country major resource is its hydroelectricity which provides electrical power to both Uganda and Kenya as well as other countries e.g. Congo, Tanzania
The Owen Falls was the first hydropower station in Uganda; this was built in1954 by the British and is located on the Victoria Nile River in the southeast Uganda. The 30 m high, Owen Falls gravity dam submerged the waterfall and controls the discharge of water from Lake Victoria into the Nile basin and supplies hydroelectricity to Uganda and Kenya.
How does hydroelectric power work?
Firstly what you should understand is that water cannot create power unless it is flowing from a higher place to a lower place e.g. River, waterfall, or a dam. This is how it works, water is held behind a dam,
forming an artificial lake, or reservoir. The water force being released from the reservoir through the dam spins the blades of a giant turbine. The turbine is connected to the generator that makes electricity as it spins. After passing through the turbine, the water flows back into the river on the other side of the dam
Does It Benefi the country
The hydro power is one of the country’s main income resources; one of its advantages is that it provides more job opportunities for the people of Uganda and it is known for being a tourist attraction. In another aspect, it helps to decrease poverty and improves he way of living. With the amount of electricity provided kids can stay up at night reading books or doing assignment, this form of electricity is cheap and affordable for the citizens of Uganda as it’s a poor country. One disadvantage of this is, if water level is down or their no electricity
this project is relevant to me because i have come from a ugandan background and i go for holiday every year so i find the hydropower very useful, this is because i could charge my phone and use my laptop wen am down there.
my plan of inquiry will be conducting a research when i go next month for holoiday, his will also me going to the station itself and give out questionnaires.
