The Technology Context – B101
Solar Energy Vending Ltd (SEV)
Vending machines can be found just about everywhere, except, maybe, where they’re needed most – tucked away on a remote beach or at the end of a gruelling golf-course hole. Solar Energy Vending Ltd (SEV), which was formed in July 2002, is an Anglo – Spanish firm that has come up with the solution: refrigerated solar powered vending machines that can be placed anywhere and is powered by the sun with the use of photovoltaics (120 watts power supply), also known as solar cells. Wherever the customers, the machine can be placed, static or mobile. It has its own supply of DC energy (60 watts DC compressor). If the power cut occurs, it will continue operating when the rest of the vending machines stop.
In a world that is becoming ever more aware of the need for energy conservation and the need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (e.g. carbon dioxide, methane), SEV Ltd has developed a machine that addresses a part of the problem caused by conventional vending machines that can be damaging to the environment as well as using mains electricity.
Today there are companies around the world developing technologically advanced solar electric power products, SEV Ltd has utilised these by using solar cells to convert sunlight into electricity. In addition, SEV Ltd has developed machines that combine solar and wind technologies to the same effect that can be used in the not so sunny parts of the world. A big challenge for SEV Ltd was developing a refrigeration system strong enough to keep the machine’s food and drinks cool, while powered solely by the sun. Solar panels on top keep the machine’s refrigerator running, and a rechargeable battery provides power at night or during long-lasting cloudy periods. A wind turbine can substitute for solar cells in less sunny climes, where hot beverages could make the vending dispensers a popular stop-off along ski runs.
The machines have been placed all over Spain and at least on one golf course in the UK. SEV Ltd is also looking for new partners to distribute to other countries. The machine is a prime advertising space as well as income source from selling food and drinks. Income tax is not payable on profits made as the machine uses the electricity generated free from solar energy as a direct alternative to conventional mains electricity.
The solar power vending machine has the highest quality in the market. It does not have any soft spots or week points and has been designed for outdoor use in any weather conditions. Many products are claimed to be green (eco friendly – e.g. solar powered streetlights, emergency phones and bus shelters). This machine is one of the most environmentally friendly products ever invented. Given the growing worldwide concern over global warming the introduction of any products powered by natural resources becomes more necessary SEV Ltd is pleased to present their product which will play in the ‘green’ revolution. If electric machines that are already in use were replaced by solar powered machines, I can see some definite prospective here as there is a lot of potential for energy saving and even companies and retailers would see the financial benefit of taking a big power-hog off their grid.
