The Technology Context – B101

Solar Power - Creating a brighter future?

Can the Solar energy of the Sun be harnessed into a useable power source for here on earth? The purpose of this technology is to help cut down the amount of harmful emissions being produced by our current tecnology, it’s these emissions that are causing global warming, and with the use of this new technology we can create a better future for the whole world.

Solar Power uses Photovoltaic Cells, similar to the ones found on a modern calculator, to capture the suns energy and turn it into energy that can be used in the home. Solar Panels are used to heat water for general use in the home. Dr Susan Roaf of the University of Oxford designed a house that would use as little energy as possible and attempt to be completely self-sufficient, her design used solar energy to power the lighting and appliances inside the house and could even power an electric car. Any excess power generated throughout the year could be sold to the national grid and on average this amounts to 500 kilowatt-hours each year.

This technology affects me personally in a way that I feel it affects all of us, global warming cant be prevented by the actions of just one person, it will take a lot of work but I feel that by implementing this technology nationwide would greatly decrease the amount of carbon emissions being produced from this country. Already there are 40,000 home in the UK using some form of this technology and the cost of it is reducing to the point where can become widely available to everyone.

There are many current sources of information on this subject and far too many things to research so i will be continuing this based on secondary sources of information. I plan to use internet search engines and library resources to gather any relavant information on this subject for future write-ups.
