The Technology Context – B101
Is the Hy-Wire concept car a thing of the future or a thing of impossibility??
Hydrogen fuel cell technology is not a new concept, nor is reducing the emissions from cars. It is the concept of being able to combine the use of hydrogen powered fuels and electricity to make something, such as a car, run with a traditional engine in the same way as normal petrol powered car, and General motors think they have the answer with the Hy-Wire concept car. The car has been designed to incorporate the use of hydrogen power and electrical wiring into a skateboard-like chassis. Unlike most hydrogen powered cars that are being released at the moment this car does not have an engine, but runs on electricity. All the mechanical linkages and hydraulics used in everyday normal cars for steering and breaking are not needed in this car as it is all wired up to a main computer mounted on the chassis, which is like a large motherboard with wheels. So is this concept car something we may be driving in the future?
Below are the current statistics about the Hy-Wire concept car:
GM HY-WIRE CONCEPT
Vehicle layout: Under-floor electric motor, fwd, 4-door, 5-pass
Engine: 82-hp, 60 kilowatt, three-phase electric motor, 1375 lb-ft @ 12,000 rpm 0-60 mph, sec16 sec (estimated)

The sustainable technology issue with this car is whether or not it will reduce the emissions that our everyday cars give and be able to run off renewable energy sources such as water and electricity. As we all know fuels such as petrol are being used up at such a rate that within tens of years there will be nothing left and all the cars we drive today will become obsolete, therefore the introduction of hydrogen powered vehicles is the way forward. Although the Hy-Wire takes it one step further removing the engine completely and therefore removing the number of emissions the car gives off, completely.
The technology that is being tried and tested as we speak to make the car that we all wish we could own, into a car that everyone will be driving in the future, is in the advanced stages. Unlike most concept cars that companies such as Jaguar, Aston Martin and Mercedes have produced, this concept car actually works and was tested on the popular car television show, Top Gear, a few years ago. There are just a few issues with the car, the main one being that it costs over a million pounds to make. This therefore means that it is unable to be put into production until there is a way to make this amazing concept car a thing of reality. I feel strongly about this car because it seems that it is going to be my generation who experience this type of new technology introduced into society for the first time. Maybe not in the next ten or twenty but within our lifetime, this is the car that potentially our children will be learning to drive in.
For further investigation I am going to try and find out how exactly this car could be put into production with such a huge price tag on the concept itself. As to me, the way we are at the moment this project seems so far in the future and the technology to advanced for commercial production at this moment in time. To do this I will have to research into the actual technology itself and be able to understand the barriers that are stopping this type of car going into production. This should then answer my original question about whether this car will ever be available to be bought by the general public.
